The Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) arrived in Koper, Slovenia, for a port visit, March 30.

Normandy, a component of the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group (TRCSG), is making her second port visit while operating in U.S. 6th Fleet.

The port visits highlight U.S. commitment to the region, as well as emphasize the importance of building new partnerships and improving war-fighting capabilities.

"We have been lucky enough to port in some beautiful places and this will be one of them," said Yeoman 1st Class Luis Diaz. "A lot of the Sailors are looking forward to the basketball game we have set up to compete with members of the Slovenian navy. It is a great opportunity to build and develop a partnership."

Normandy's visit to Koper will also give crew the chance to take Morale, Welfare and Recreation coordinated tours of local sights and attractions during their off-duty hours.

"I think Koper has a lot of beautiful sights to offer us and many people want to go tour the caves and local town, to see some shops and museums," said Operations Specialist 2nd Class Peter Kyonda. "I have signed up for the Venice tour as well and can't wait to take some pictures to show my family back home."

The tours include a trip to the Skockjan Caves, a visit to a local Vinakras winery, and to Venice, Italy, to see some of the neighboring country-side.

The TRCSG is composed of Carrier Strike Group 12, the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt (CVN 71), Carrier Air Wing (CVW) 1, Destroyer Squadron (DESRON) 2 staff, and the guided-missile destroyers USS Winston S. Churchill (DDG 81), USS Forest Sherman (DDG 98) and USS Farragut (DDG 99).

U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
