Navy Personnel Command (NPC) was presented the Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) by Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Adm. Jonathan Greenert during a command visit April 30.

According to the award citation, NPC was recognized for meritorious service from Jan. 1, 2013, to Jan. 1, 2015 for expanding from a nation-wide to a global footprint, setting the standard as a Fortune 500-sized government enterprise.

Greenert was at Millington conducting an all-hands call where he addressed the Sailors and civilians who work aboard Naval Support Activity Mid-South which includes NPC.

"Over the past couple of years the biggest problem that I've had to deal with - and we've all had to deal with it - is gaps at sea," said Greenert.

According to the CNO, over the course of about two-and-a-half years NPC's efforts reduced gaps at sea from more than 10,000 to less than 3,000. "That is a major change. I would like to take the opportunity to say thank you and present you with a unit citation," he said.

The MUC was established by former Secretary of the Navy John T. McNaughton in 1967 to be given to a unit for valorous or meritorious achievement.
