Friends and family gathered onboard Naval Station Newport, Rhode Island, to witness the graduation of 227 midshipmen candidates from the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School (NAPS), May 8.

The graduation began with a special demonstration parachute jump from the U.S. Navy parachute demonstration team, the Leap Frogs, followed by remarks from the battalion commander, Commander Officer of NAPS Capt. Mike Doherty, and Superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy Vice Adm. Walter "Ted" Carter.

"Today, you are graduating from the fourth oldest educational institution in the Navy. In six short weeks, you will begin your education and training at the oldest school in the Navy," said Carter. "The Naval Academy Preparatory School isn't easy, and only those with dedication and strong work ethic make it through this program."

Coming from 38 of the 50 states, and active duty Fleet Sailors and Marine Corps, 251 men and women reported to NAPS where they were tested morally, mentally and physically. The class of 2015 performed extremely well, achieving the highest grades of any class in the past five years.

Eleven midshipmen candidates were recognized for excelling in academic, military and athletic performance. Carter presented the USNA Superintendent's award to Midshipman Candidate Benjamin Stewart. The award recognizes the midshipman candidate who has best epitomized the outstanding academic, athletic, and military leadership qualities desired in a Naval Academy Midshipman.

Upon being presented with their graduation certificates, the class of 2015 was dismissed for the final time.

"Battalion commander, for the final time dismiss the battalion," said Doherty.

Midshipman Candidate Yun Hwang, battalion commander, gave the final order.

"Battalion, Dismissed," said Hwang.

This year's class will join the approximately 800 direct-entry plebes to form the U.S. Naval Academy's class of 2019. They will begin their training together on July 1 for Induction Day, the beginning of Plebe Summer.

"I am excited for you to rise to the challenges of Plebe Summer, and earn your place in the Brigade of Midshipmen," said Carter.

NAPS is a one year post-high school program for U.S. Naval Academy (USNA) applicants who are selected by USNA to receive additional academic preparation. The mission of NAPS is to enhance midshipmen candidates' moral, mental and physical foundations to prepare them for success at the U.S. Naval Academy. Since 1915, NAPS has provided the Naval Academy with emerging young leaders of character and consequence. The institution has graduated a four-star admiral, a four-star general, two astronauts, and a Rhodes scholar.
