The Navy Cyber Warfare Development Group (NCWDG) Marksmanship Team is the Atlantic Fleet Small Command Division Champion for both rifle and pistol and overall Atlantic Fleet Champion for pistol after last month's Atlantic Fleet competition.

In addition, the five-member team - Cmdr. Matthew Bartel, Lt. Cmdr. Jon Hay, Command Master Chif Don Abele, Ensign Bill Reimer, and Cryptologic Technician (Collection) 1st Class Bumsoon Lee - scored three firsts.

This year's results built on last year's success of first in the small command rifle division and second in the small command pistol competition. The team is two-years-old.

"When I got to the command, we stood up the marksmanship program," said Bartel, who was a member of the rifle team at the U.S. Naval Academy. "Our command is very supportive and has provided the resources the team needs, which makes our success possible."

Results are not yet out for the All Navy match where members of the NCWDG team also are competing for places on the All-Navy team for the interservice and national competitions. The All-Navy match is a postal match with teams shooting on each coast and comparing scores. The East Coast finished on April 26 and the West Coast on May 9. The All Navy team (top 20 Navy shooters in each discipline) will be announced via RMG to the fleets.

The next competition is the Interservice Pistol Championship at Fort Benning, Georgia, June 7-12, and then the National Championships at Camp Perry, Ohio, July 5-12.

The pistol National Match Course is 30 shots (10 shots slow fire at 50 yards, 10 shots timed fire at 25 yards, and 10 shots rapid fire at 25 yards, all shot one handed) using either the M1911 .45 or the M9 9mm pistol. The rifle course of fire is 10 shots standing slow fire at 200 yards, 10 shots rapid fire sitting at 200 yards, 10 shots rapid fire prone (laying down) at 300 yards, and 20 shots slow fire prone at 600 yards, using the AR-15 (semi-auto version of the M-16).

Awards are based on command size: Large command for units with more than 500 personnel and small command for under 500 personnel (NCWDG is a small command). First through third place are awarded for each discipline and each command size (1-3 Large Command Pistol, 1-3 Large Command Rifle, 1-3 Small Command Pistol, 1-3 Small Command Rifle). Additionally, the highest scoring Navy team (regardless of command size) earns the Atlantic Fleet Trophy for rifle or pistol.
