Naval Support Activity (NSA) Mid-South hosted the 6th annual Navy Ten Nautical Miler race, June 7.

Pre-registration for the race sold out more than 6 weeks before the event with 1,200 runners registered.

The race opened up additional spots for registration at the race expo on June 6. Dedicated runners began lining up as early as 6 a.m. for an opportunity at noon to grab one of 75 additional registration spots in the race.

On race day, 1,118 runners took part in the race honoring the Battle of Midway.

The overall winner of the race was Aaron Hickman, 34, with a final time of 1:10:23 (gun time).

The first female finisher was Brittany Greenberg, 27, with a final time of 1:23:35 (gun time).

The race had the support of more than 200 volunteers from NSA Mid-South and tenant commands. Additionally, the local police, sherrif, and fire departments volunteered their time and support.

"I was really proud of the base as people ran through it," said Capt. Doug Walker, commanding officer, NSA Mid-South. "It was a great event and great turn-out."
Walker, who transfers in July said he looks forward to seeing the race continue to grow. "I want to come back next year and the year after that!"

The race is the first and only of its kind. No other foot race has been based on nautical miles before. Ten nautical miles is equivalent to about 11.5 miles.
The distance of 10 nautical miles and the month of June are significant for every Sailor. When Sailors look out over the horizon from the deck of a ship, they can see 10 nautical miles. The race is held in the month of June to commemorate the Battle of Midway and the 307 Sailors that lost their lives on that June day in 1942. Those Sailors once looked over the horizon, 10 nautical miles.

The Navy Ten Nautical Miler is sanctioned by USA Track and Field, the national governing body for track and field, long distance running, and race walking in the United States. The event is being coordinated in association with the Memphis Runners Track Club.
