Lincoln Deck Department Celebrates 2 Years DUI Free

25 June 2015
Sailors assigned to the Deck Department of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) celebrated two years of being DUI-free on June 22.
Sailors assigned to the Deck Department of the Nimitz-class aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln (CVN 72) celebrated two years of being DUI-free on June 22.

Lincoln's Commanding Officer, Capt. Ron Ravelo, spoke with the Sailors in Deck Department and congratulated them for their dedication to staying out of trouble despite having some of the most junior Sailors on the ship.

"For the most junior and vulnerable Sailors on the ship, making it two years without a DUI is a phenomenal milestone," Ravelo said.

The motivating factor for such a wonderful streak is the Sailors' dedication to getting the ship back online and ready for delivery back to the fleet.

"Our motivation is in getting the job done and getting the foc'sle back in tip-top shape," said Boatswain's Mate 3rd Class Mara Garcia. "I'm proud of my department for coming so far in refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH)."

According to Lt. Kimberley Temple, Lincoln's first lieutenant, there are 119 junior Sailors in Deck Department, and they have all stayed DUI-free since May 2013.

"I'm ecstatically proud of them because I have the most junior Sailors on the ship," Temple said. "I'm not sure if any other carrier has this record."

Abraham Lincoln is currently undergoing refueling and complex overhaul (RCOH) at Newport News Shipbuilding, a division of Huntington Ingalls Industries in Newport News.

Abraham Lincoln is the fifth ship of the Nimitz class to undergo RCOH, a major life-cycle milestone. Once RCOH is complete, the ship will be one of the most modern and technologically advanced Nimitz-class aircraft carriers in the fleet and will continue to be a vital part of the nation's defense.
