Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) Northwest celebrated its 10th anniversary, Aug. 19.

"It feels great to celebrate our 10th anniversary," said Capt. Mark Geronime, commanding officer, NAVFAC Northwest. "Our employees work at every naval installation, from the Pacific Northwest through the Midwest, and every day their goal is to deliver quality, timely and cost-effective products and services to enable the global warfighter."

Some of these products and services include building a new P8-A trainer facility at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island and the installation of ground source heat pumps at Bremerton, Washington.

"Wherever you find the Navy, you will find NAVFAC," said Geronime.

Over the course of ten years, NAVFAC Northwest divested 100 percent of military family housing located throughout the Northwest to public-private venture partners. These partners have revitalized housing in the area with updated floor plans and modern designs in support of Sailors, Marines and their families.

The direct environmental support that NAVFAC Northwest provides to local Navy commands has resulted in nine Secretary of the Navy and Chief of Naval Operations environmental awards.

NAVFAC Northwest has a strong recycling program that has diverted 89,000 tons of solid waste from landfills.

The combination of energy projects and consumption reduction over the past 10 years has resulted in approximately $78 million in energy cost savings. Because of this focus on energy awareness, security, and conservation, local Navy commands have received five Secretary of the Navy energy awards.

One of the most important accomplishments has been a focus on safety. When the command stood up in 2005, it recorded 60 mishaps, with 404 days of light duty for employees and 422 days off the job. In 2014, the command recorded 21 mishaps, with eight days of light duty and four days off the job.
