The Navy Exchange (NEX) at Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon has been named the 2014 Bingham Award winner in the $3 to $6 million sales category, marking the third win for the Fallon NEX.

Commanding Officer Capt. Leif Steinbaugh was presented the Bingham Award by Mr. Gary King, the senior vice president of NEX's stateside stores, Aug. 19, during a ceremony in front of the exchange.

"Winning the Bingham represents a tremendous achievement on the part of the store associates, the managers, as well as the base personnel," said King. "This exchange has a unique challenge in that you don't have the help that is present in the other exchanges, but rise to the challenge nonetheless."

The award recognizes facilities within the Navy Exchange system for overall financial results and customer service.

"This award is only presented to the best of the best of Navy Exchanges," King added. "This is a direct representation of the store associates and their willingness to do everything they do every day."

The Bingham Awards are broken down over nine tier groups based on the size of the facility and annual sales.

"We have a diverse customer service base, from retirees and about a thousand local Sailors, to almost doubling that when the air wings are in," said Steinbaugh. "It's a unique challenge to be able to cater to the long-term needs of those stationed here and the short-term needs of our air wing Sailors, and this team does a fantastic job with outstanding customer service. This award is a testament to the hard work and dedication of this exchange team."

Named after the late Capt. W. H. Bingham, the Bingham Award program was established in 1979 to recognize outstanding performance in customer service and exchange operations. Bingham was the chief executive of the Roswell H. Macy Company, the owner of the Macy's department stores, and was appointed by the Secretary of the Navy in 1945 to lead an advisory board for the establishment of the Navy Exchange system.
