The guided-missile destroyer USS Ramage (DDG 61) departed Naval Station Norfolk to begin composite training unit exercise, Sept. 2, as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group 8.

The exercise tests the ability of HSTCSG to react to real-world scenarios and perform as an integrated unit. It is the final in a series of training exercises that, upon successful completion, will certify CSG-8 ready for deployment.

"COMTUEX is an opportunity for the entire Ramage team to hone our skillset so that we deploy ready for whatever mission we are called upon to execute," said Cmdr. J. Lang, Ramage's commanding officer.

During this multi-week exercise, the entire strike group will be evaluated on a range of operations to include building international partnerships, maritime security operations, and major combat operations.

The Harry S. Truman CSG is composed of the Carrier Strike Group 8 staff, Carrier Air Wing 7, Destroyer Squadron 28, USS Harry S. Truman (CVN 75), guided-missile destroyers USS Ramage (DDG 61), USS Gonzalez (DDG 66), USS The Sullivans (DDG 68), USS Gravely (DDG 107), as well as guided-missile cruiser, USS Anzio (CG 68).
