A Sailor assigned to Navy Information Operations Command (NIOC) Hawaii died as a result of injuries sustained after falling from a cliff at approximately 12:14 p.m. Sept. 6, in Honolulu, Hawaii.

Cryptologic Technician (Collection) Seaman Andrew S. Villolovos, 21, originally from Ohio, was engaged in recreational hiking, when he was swept into the ocean by a wave outside Hanauma Bay.

The Honolulu Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard and Ocean Safety crews conducted a search and recovered Villolovos from the water at approximately 2:50 p.m. He was subsequently pronounced dead by on-scene paramedics.

"This is a tragic and unexpected loss for the men and women of NIOC Hawaii," said Capt. James Mills, commanding officer of NIOC Hawaii. "Seaman Villolovos will long be remembered by his shipmates. His energy, positive outlook, and love of life made a tremendous impact."

Villolovos joined the Navy July 7, 2014.

The incident is currently under investigation.
