USS Jason Dunham Arrives in Montenegro

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) arrived in Bar, Montenegro, for a scheduled port visit March 13.
The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer USS Jason Dunham (DDG 109) arrived in Bar, Montenegro, for a scheduled port visit March 13.

This port visit serves to continue U.S. 6th Fleet efforts to build U.S.-Montenegrin interoperability as part of the Global Network of Navies which will improve maritime safety and security in the region.

Quick Facts:
* While in port, USS Jason Dunham Commanding Officer Cmdr. Darren Dugan and the ship's crew will meet with their Montenegrin navy counterparts, along with local officials and citizens of Bar.
o Dugan will have an official call with the Mayor of Bar, Zoran Srzenti and Montenegro's navy Commander Capt. Darko Vukovic.

* This port visit will also provide Jason Dunham Sailors with an opportunity to meet with the people of Bar and to experience the rich history and culture of Montenegro.
o The interaction between Sailors and the people will help foster knowledge of cultural understanding and trust.
o Jason Dunham's visit will also help strengthen the relationship between the U.S. and Montenegro.

* The ship is named after U.S. Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham, who was mortally wounded after he covered an insurgent's grenade with his helmet and body, thus saving the lives of his Marines from the blast. For his actions he was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor January 11, 2007.

* USS Jason Dunham is the 59th destroyer in its class and was built by Bath Iron Works in the state of Maine, which is the state partner of Montenegro.

* Jason Dunham, homeported in Norfolk, is conducting naval operations in the U.S. 6th Fleet area of operations in support of U.S. national security interests in Europe.

* U.S. 6th Fleet, headquartered in Naples, Italy, conducts the full spectrum of joint and naval operations, often in concert with allied, joint, and interagency partners, in order to advance U.S. national interests and security and stability in Europe and Africa.
