It's time to step onto the field to play softball and flag football at Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay's intramural spring sports league, beginning March 23.

All active-duty service members, retirees, and family members over 18 years of age are invited to play. For those unable to play, attendance to show support for the teams is highly encouraged.

"We are ready to begin the spring sports season," said Lauren Cannedy, Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) sports coordinator. "We have expanded the softball fields to make it safer, and have a new synthetic turf field for flag football."

There are a few new rules that have been added to the spring league.

"Team members must be from the same command," said Cannedy. "Additionally, for softball, there is a home run limit of three per inning, and [United States Specialty Sports Association] bats are now authorized to be used, which is why the fields were expanded."

With more than 25 games per week, there will be plenty of action and excitement on the fields.

"I take part in the intramural leagues because it helps me stay in shape, and I have four boys to set an example for," said Machinery Repairman 2nd Class Jonathan Gist from Port Operations. "The spring league is great because everybody is eager to get outside with their family, and there is a great sense of comradery."

Coaches can come to update team rosters at the MWR office at the gym and they are able to do so until the fourth week of the season.

"Between coaching and being a player, I take the time to familiarize myself with the rules for this league, and I would recommend everyone to do so," said Gist. "The new turf is a morale booster and being able to use new equipment brings more excitement."

There will be a double-elimination playoff for the top six teams in flag football and the top 10 teams in softball.
