NAS Fallon Conducts PCIED Exercise

Naval Air Station (NAS) Fallon's Navy Security Force (NSF) conducted a Personnel Carried Improvised Explosive Device (PCIED) drill at the Lincoln Housing Office, March 17.

During the exercise, NSF had to identify and respond to a simulated disgruntled dependent with a PCIED, secure the scene, and establish incident command for the protection of government and civilian assets and personnel.

"It was a great learning experience for not only the watchstanders, but also the Installation Training Team (ITT)," said NAS Fallon's Training Officer Chris Pierce. "One of the reasons that we execute these drills and exercises is to validate and update our standard operating procedures and pre-planned responses. This ensures that they are aligned with what would be expected with current threats."

During the exercise, ITT and NSF were able to correct deficiencies and responses through the use of training time outs.

"It was great to be able to have a training time out, discuss issues, and reset," stated Master-at-Arms 3rd Class Kevin Young. "Because when a real incident occurs you won't have that opportunity."

Pierce pointed out that the ITT designs drills and scenarios that require watchstanders to think 'outside of the box.' Everyone walked away with valuable information, which prepares the training team for the next drill, and the watchstanders for the next possible real world incident.

"The NAS Fallon ITT takes pride in ensuring that the watchstanders receive valuable lessons learned from training," said Pierce. "We then recommend and incorporate the appropriate changes, and keep the chain of command appraised of concerns which may require Higher Headquarters (HHQ), or U.S. States Fleet Forces (USFF) attention."
