In October 2022, Anne Sandel re-assumed the duties of acting principal civilian deputy to the ASN (RD&A), providing oversight and policy for Navy & Marine Corps research, development, and acquisition/sustainment programs for shipbuilding, aviation, space, weapon systems, and communication systems. Previously, she served as executive director at the Office of Naval Research, and the founding executive director at PEO, Integrated Warfare Systems. In 2020, the American Society of Naval Engineers (ASNE) awarded its most prestigious accolade, the Harold E. Saunders Award for Lifetime Achievement, to Sandel for her outstanding contributions over the course of her career to the Navy and nation.
