Melissa Smoot retired after more than 30 years of service with the Department of Navy. She was the first woman to serve as the executive director and the deputy commander of logistics, maintenance, and industrial operations. Smoot also served as acting vice director, Navy Staff, where she was responsible for providing leadership and oversight on Navy staff, administrative matter and programs supporting CNO’s priorities. Smoot retired from the Navy in 2007 after 25 years of service, where she served as an engineering duty officer. Her tours of duty spanned different communities and experiences, to includes operational, maintenance, acquisition, nuclear propulsion, and naval special warfare.
