Authors interested in obtaining support from the U.S. Navy for projects, including assistance with fact-checking, facility embarks, or interviews, should begin by completing the Author Support Program request form. To ensure an expedited review, applicants are encouraged to fill out the form as completely as possible without using external links or references. The completed form should be submitted via email to authorsupport@us.navy.mil.
Upon receipt, the Navy Office of Information (CHINFO) Community Outreach team will review the request and make a recommendation to the Chief of Information for final approval. Please note that projects are more likely to be supported if the author has already secured a letter of intent to publish. If the project is approved, CHINFO will facilitate a connection between the author and the relevant command or subject matter expert. The level of support ultimately provided, if any, will be determined by the individual operational commanders based on their resources and mission requirements.
Current or former Department of the Navy personnel, including active duty, reserve, and government civilians, who are authoring books must adhere to specific regulations regarding prepublication review. These individuals should reference DoD Instruction 5230.09 “Clearance Of DoD Information For Public Release” and Directive-type Memorandum 24-005, titled “Prepublication and Security Review of Privately Written Works by Current and Former DoD Personnel,” for detailed guidance.
